Two Brown Dots: New Poets of America 46 is an anthology of poetry that showcases the diverse voices and perspectives of contemporary American poets. Edited by Tracy K. Smith, the anthology features the work of 92 poets, including both established and emerging voices. The poets featured in the anthology come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and their work reflects the richness and diversity of the American poetic landscape.
The title of the anthology, Two Brown Dots, is a reference to the two dots that appear at the end of every line of poetry. These dots are often seen as a symbol of the poet's breath, and they serve to remind us that poetry is a living, breathing art form. The two brown dots also suggest the idea of a dialogue between the poet and the reader. Poetry is not a one-way street; it is a conversation between the poet and the reader, and the two brown dots invite the reader to enter into that conversation.
The poets featured in Two Brown Dots explore a wide range of themes, from love and loss to race and identity. Their work is often personal and reflective, but it also speaks to the larger human condition. The poems in this anthology are both beautiful and thought-provoking, and they offer a glimpse into the minds and hearts of some of the most talented poets writing today.
Here are a few of the poems included in Two Brown Dots:
- "The World Is Too Much" by Audre Lorde
- "For My People" by Margaret Walker
- "I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes
- "A Litany for Survival" by Audre Lorde
- "Poem for My Father" by June Jordan
- "The Black Woman" by Gwendolyn Brooks
- "Sister Outsider" by Audre Lorde
- "Poem to My Lover" by June Jordan
- "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron
- "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf" by Ntozake Shange
These poems are just a small sampling of the many wonderful poems that are included in Two Brown Dots. This anthology is a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary American poetry. It is a book that will challenge you, inspire you, and stay with you long after you finish reading it.
