Early Life and Education

Patrick Joseph Lucey was born on March 21, 1918, in Springfield, Wisconsin. The son of Irish immigrants, he was raised in a devout Catholic family. Lucey attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. He then went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, graduating in 1942.

Military Service

Upon graduating from law school, Lucey joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during the Battle of Okinawa.

Political Career

After the war, Lucey returned to Wisconsin and began his political career. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1948 and served as the assembly speaker from 1953 to 1957. In 1964, he was elected lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, serving under Governor Warren Knowles.

Governorship

In 1970, Lucey was elected governor of Wisconsin. He served two terms, from 1971 to 1979. As governor, Lucey implemented a number of progressive policies, including:
