What is Child Abuse?

  • Physical abuse: bruises, cuts, burns, or broken bones; unexplained injuries; difficulty walking or sitting; flinching or cowering when touched.
  • Sexual abuse: torn or bloody underwear; pain or itching in the genital area; difficulty walking or sitting; sexually transmitted infections; pregnancy.
  • Emotional abuse: low self-esteem; difficulty forming relationships; withdrawal from activities; changes in behavior; self-destructive behaviors.
  • Neglect: underweight or overweight; poor hygiene; lack of appropriate clothing; frequent absences from school; unattended medical needs.

Risk Factors for Child Abuse

There are a number of risk factors that can increase a child's risk of being abused. These risk factors include:

  • Poverty
  • Parental substance abuse
  • Parental mental illness
  • Domestic violence
  • Exposure to violence in the community
  • Having a disability
  • Being in foster care

Consequences of Child Abuse

Child abuse can have a devastating impact on a child's physical, emotional, and mental health. The consequences of child abuse can include:

  • Physical injuries
  • Developmental delays
  • Mental health problems
  • Behavioral problems
  • Increased risk of future victimization
  • Death

Prevention of Child Abuse

There are a number of things that can be done to prevent child abuse. These include:
