Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie, better known as Josephine Bonaparte, was the first Empress of the French and the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. She was born on June 23, 1763, on the island of Martinique in the Caribbean. Her father was a wealthy sugar plantation owner, and her mother was a Creole woman. Josephine was educated in France, where she spent most of her childhood and teenage years. She was a beautiful and charming young woman, and she quickly became a favorite of the French court.
