Marilyn's Story

Marilyn's first child, a son named Ethan, was born with a congenital heart defect called tetralogy of Fallot. This is a complex heart defect that affects the structure of the heart and the way blood flows through it. Ethan had to have open-heart surgery when he was just 3 months old. The surgery was successful, but Ethan continued to have health problems throughout his childhood.

In 2007, Marilyn's second child, a daughter named Ava, was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This is a rare and life-threatening heart defect that affects the development of the left side of the heart. Ava had to have open-heart surgery when she was just 3 days old. The surgery was successful, but Ava continued to have health problems throughout her childhood.

Marilyn and her husband, Chris, dedicated themselves to learning everything they could about congenital heart defects. They joined support groups and became involved in advocacy work. Marilyn became a passionate advocate for families affected by congenital heart defects. She spoke at conferences and lobbied for funding for research and support services.

The Heart Warrior Movement
