Natural History

Crested Gecks are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. They are arboreal, spending most of their time in trees or shrubs. Their natural diet consists of insects, fruits, and nectar. In captivity, they can be fed a variety of commercially available gecko diets.

Vivarium Setup

The ideal vivarium for a Crested Gecko is a 18x18x24 inch enclosure. This size provides enough space for the gecko to move around and climb. The vivarium should be well-ventilated and have a secure lid to prevent the gecko from escaping.

The vivarium should be decorated with a variety of plants and branches to provide the gecko with hiding places and climbing opportunities. It is also important to provide a humid environment by misting the vivarium with water daily.

Feeding

Crested Geckos should be fed a variety of insects, fruits, and nectar. Insects can include crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms, and waxworms. Fruits can include bananas, grapes, and mangoes. Nectar can be provided in the form of a commercial gecko diet or a homemade mixture of fruit juice and honey.

Crested Geckos should be fed every other day. Juveniles should be fed more frequently, up to three times per week.

Breeding

Crested Geckos reach sexual maturity at about 18 months of age. Breeding season typically occurs from September to March. To breed Crested Geckos, you will need a male and female gecko that are both sexually mature.

The female gecko will lay eggs about two weeks after mating. The eggs should be incubated at a temperature of 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The eggs will hatch after about 60-90 days.

Health Issues

Crested Gecks are generally healthy reptiles, but they can be susceptible to a variety of health issues, including metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, and parasites.

Metabolic bone disease is a condition that occurs when a gecko does not get enough calcium in its diet. This can lead to a variety of problems, including weak bones, seizures, and death.

Respiratory infections are another common health issue in Crested Gecks. These infections can be caused by a variety of factors, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Symptoms of a respiratory infection include coughing, sneezing, and difficulty breathing.

Parasites are another common problem in Crested Gecks. Parasites can include mites, ticks, and worms. Symptoms of a parasite infection include weight loss, lethargy, and diarrhea.

Crested Geckos are fascinating and rewarding pets. By providing them with proper care, you can ensure that they live long and healthy lives. This guide has provided you with all the information you need to get started, but there are many more resources available online and from your local veterinarian.
