The Henry Stimson Lectures Series was established in 1988 to honor Stimson's legacy and to promote the study of American foreign policy. The series brings together leading scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss the most pressing issues facing the United States and the world.

Stimson's Early Life and Career

Henry L. Stimson was born in New York City in 1867. He graduated from Harvard College in 1888 and from Harvard Law School in 1890. After practicing law in New York City for several years, he entered politics.

Stimson served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1906 to 1909. He was then appointed Secretary of War by President William Howard Taft. As Secretary of War, Stimson oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal and the creation of the National Guard.

Stimson's Role in World War II

Stimson was appointed Secretary of War again by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940. He played a key role in the American war effort during World War II. He oversaw the mobilization of the American military, the production of war materiel, and the development of the atomic bomb.

Stimson was a strong advocate for the use of the atomic bomb against Japan. He believed that it would save the lives of American soldiers and hasten the end of the war. However, he was also concerned about the long-term consequences of using nuclear weapons.

Stimson's Post-War Career

After the war, Stimson served as Secretary of State under President Harry S. Truman. He was a strong advocate for the United Nations and for the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the end of the Korean War.

Stimson retired from public service in 1953. He died in 1955 at the age of 88.

The Enduring Legacy of Henry L. Stimson

Henry L. Stimson was a complex and controversial figure. He was a strong advocate for American military power, but he was also concerned about the dangers of nuclear weapons. He was a pragmatist who was willing to make difficult decisions, but he was also a man of principle who was guided by his conscience.

Stimson's legacy is still debated today. Some historians view him as a great statesman who helped to shape the course of the 20th century. Others see him as a flawed figure who made some serious mistakes. However, there is no doubt that Stimson was a major figure in American history. His ideas and actions continue to influence international relations today.
